AUGUST 7th - AMANDA PAGE - WSET4 - WINES OF SOUTHERN ITALY Come explore the beauty of Southern Italy from the Islands of Sardegna and Sicily through Cilento National Park to the sprawling hills of Puglia. We’ll learn how the various soils and climatic conditions result in these uniquely delicious wines. We’ll taste our way through 6 indigenous vinos from these regions to better understand the diverse styles. Amanda Page, Vice President of Sales, Banville Wine Merchants, is a diplomate of the Wine & Spirits Education Trust Level 4. She is also a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, New York, and has cooked for various restaurants, including Cape Cod’s Chatham Bars Inn and DC’s Mandarin Oriental.
SEPTEMBER 4th - LESLIE GIMBLE - WINES OF THE RHONE: North, South, and Points Between. The Rhone wine region or appellation extends roughly from Lyon in the north, one hundred fifty miles south, to Avignon. Northern (red) Rhones are characteristically single varietal Syrah, whereas Southern Rhones and the Chateauneuf du Pape, in particular are notably blends of at least Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre (hence "GSM" shorthand). Interestingly enough, the wines that first lent fame to the Rhone, those grown for the Papal seat in Avignon, were white wines. This class will explore exemplary white and red wines by Xavier, A. Jaume, Delaroche, Corne Loup, Chateau Cabrieres, and Mordoree (subject to availability). Leslie Gimble is a vice president of Kysela Pere et Fils, and a former General Manager of Magruders. Her expertise in identifying distinctive terroir-driven wines disstinguishes her approach to wine curation and education, illuminating the complexities and beauty of small-lot artisanal wines that capture the essence of each vineyard.
OCTOBER 2nd - PETER GAYLOR - UNDERSTANDING BORDEAUX Bordeaux is the largest wine-producing area of France, over one fourth of the total wine output. In this class we will explore the importance of the rivers (Gironde, Dordogne, and Garonne) in Bordeaux, how they divide the region, and why the signature grapes of Bordeaux - Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Carmenere, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle grow better in each of the sub-regions. We will also explore how pivotal historical events such as the marriage of King Henri II of France, to Eleanor of Aquitane, and the French Revolution affected the development of both wine agriculture and exports.
NOVEMBER 6th - FRAN KYSELA - REFLECTIONS IN BURGUNDY Burgundy, "Bourgogne" in French, is the renowned birthplace of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the grapes that predominate the region's production. Although Bordeaux to the west, produces about four times as much wine every year, Burgundy's estimated 30,000 hectares (74,000 acres) of vineyards are of equal prominence. This limited production means that Burgundy wines are often in high demand and can be difficult to obtain, adding to their exclusivity and desirability. Plus, Burgundy consists of many small estates, with the average small estate constituting around 6.51 hectares. Challenging growing conditions and modest sized properties help to explain why "blue chip" burgundies are so highly prized. Fran Kysela founded Kysela Pere et Fils in 1994 two years after being awarded Master Sommelier from the British Court of Master Sommeliers. Mr. Kysela inhereted his interest in wine from his father who was one of the top collectors in the country, boasting a 4,000 bottle cellar. He has worked as a wholesale representative, wine steward, national sales director and wine importer. Wine Enthusiast Magazine named Kyslea Pere et Fils, Ltd, Importer of the Year in 2013.
DECEMBER 4th - PETER GAYLOR - INTRODUCING THE GROWER-PRODUCER CHAMPAGNE Understanding the Difference Between Owner-Grower Champagnes and Negociant Champages This class is an introduction to the glorious Champagnes made in the north of France; the centuries of history, the wines that crowned French Kings. We will explore the conditions that gave this appellation its reputation first, for still wines, then the unique circumstances that made it the center of the world for its best and most renowned sparkling wine.
