What Makes Owner Grower Champagnes Different from Negociant Champagnes Join us for an introduction to the wines of Champagne in northern France. We will look at the long history of the region and how it rose from making still wines for French royalty to becoming the home of some of the world’s most celebrated sparkling wines. We will talk through the main grape varieties of Champagne: Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, along with a quick look at the four lesser known grapes. You will learn how each one reflects where it is grown and how it shapes the aromas and flavors in the glass. Featured Wines: Roland Champion Éclat de Craie Grand Cru Chouilly NV Klepka Sausse ‘Mille Or’ Oger Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Michel Turgy Réserve Sélection Brut Grand Cru Mesnil Blanc de Blancs NV Goutorbe-Bouillot Reflets de Rivière Brut NV J. Lassalle ‘Préference’ Brut Premier Cru NV André Clouet Brut Grand Cru Rose NV (Selections subject to change) We will also explore key Champagne styles, including the cru system such as Grand Cru, Premier Cru, and the classic village wines. Along the way we will walk through how Champagne is made and why owner grower bottlings are earning attention around the world as distinctive and often great value alternatives to well known vintage and luxury houses. |
